Wearable Devices: Hype or Help?
When: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: WilmerHale, 950 Page Mill Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94304
Smartphones have become ubiquitous and manufacturing costs for networked devices have declined. This trend has created a new, growing device category: Wearable devices that contain:
- Sensors to capture body movement and environmental data
- A transmitter to send this data to the smart phone or other computer connected to the cloud, where the data can be displayed and interpreted.
Wearable devices promise to help the consumer monitor their fitness and solve their health problems, from back pain to sleep deprivation. There is no doubt about it – when you first see the data that a simple wrist or back sensor can record on a second-by-second basis, you get that sense of “Wow” that you felt when you first touched a smartphone. You have just entered a new age of body instrumentation and monitoring! But does this excitement (and wearable device usage) quickly wear off, or can the best of these devices actually cause the user to change their behavior – and improve their health?
We assembled the leaders of the most exciting wearable device start-ups in Silicon Valley to find out more about their potential – and to ask them the tough questions to discern whether this new class of device is full of hype – or maybe can be of help?
