Our annual conference will gather tech leaders to discuss the digital market, investment trends, entrepreneurship and Brazil’s role in the global economy.
Date: Sep 25, 2015, 8:30am – 6:30pm
Location: SRI International , 333 Ravenswood Ave, Menlo Park, CA
There has never been so many bad news coming from Brazil.
Economic downturn coupled with the largest corruption scandal in the country’s history involving the oil company Petrobras and the Workers Party resulted in a political crisis with no end in sight and helped sunk President Rousseff’s approval rate to a record low of 8%.
Brazil Central bank said in June that the GDP may contract by 1.1% in 2015 and has raised its inflation forecast to 9%, the highest Brazil has had in more than a decade.
The real has fallen to a 12-year low. Purchases of consumer goods have plunged, unemployment soared to 6.90% and households are defaulting on loans at the fastest pace in six years.
Nonetheless, Brazil’s IT industry continues to expand placing the country among the top markets for U.S. corporations.
In 2014, IT spending exceeded $118 billion and is expected to double it by year 2020. The Brazilian online users have quadrupled in the past 10 years. More than half of the population, about 110 million people, access the internet daily spending about 3.8 hours on social media sites. Hence, Facebook users surpassed 70 million. The country is also among the fastest-growing markets for Twitter and LinkedIn and is responsible for 6.5% of Instagram’s traffic.
A number of global companies have been successfully operating in Brazil. Some are increasing investments. Google has announced it will double the number of engineers in its R&D centers, Motorola has just signed partnership agreements with Brazilian universities to develop 4G products, GM announced it will double investments in the country through 2019 to about $3.8 billion, and last June, Oracle announced it will open a cloud data center in Campinas to support its SaaS offerings.
